Garden Grove Unified School District AVID Students Earn Top Scholarships

Twenty-two AVID seniors from Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) were awarded more than $536,000 in college scholarships during the 2019 AVID Senior Standout Recognition & Scholarship Presentation hosted on April 24 by the Orange County Department of Education. The event also recognizes one impressive Senior Standout from each high school from AVID programs across Orange County.

Garden Grove Unified School District Launches Second Computer Science Academy

Garden Grove Unified School District is partnering with Code to the Future to launch the district’s second Computer Science Academy at Fitz Intermediate School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Fitz administrators made the announcement to students and parents on April 25 during the school’s Open House celebration, which featured student performances, a tour of the school’s new Tech Lab and Media Center, and information about the school’s academic and extracurricular offerings.

Garden Grove Unified School District Schedules Preview of Recommended Textbooks for Business Mathematics and Finance

A new textbook for the Business Mathematics and Finance course has been recommended for adoption and purchase by the Garden Grove Unified School District.  The textbook will be on  public display from Monday, April 15 through Thursday, May 16 at the Garden Grove Unified School District Education Center, 10331 Stanford Ave., Garden Grove.

GGUSD Named among Nation’s Best for Music Education

Garden Grove Unified School District has received the 2019 Best Communities for Music Education Award, a distinction presented to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. GGUSD is one of only four districts in Orange County and one of 18 districts across California to receive this national recognition.

GGUSD Students Show Off Their Work at the 41st Annual First Impressions Art Show

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) hosted its 41st annual First Impressions Art Show to celebrate the creative talent of hundreds of students from all grade levels from preschool to high school. Awards were presented in front of a packed room of parents, staff, and community members at the Garden Grove Community Center on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

GGUSD Student Takes Home First Place in Chapman University Arts Contest

Irvine Intermediate School student Carly Nguyen won first place in the Intermediate Film Category at the 20th Annual Holocaust Art & Writing Contest sponsored by Chapman University and The 1939 Society. The short film titled “Regardless of Our Differences" is about helping others in need, no matter the differences we may have with them.

Three GGUSD High Schools Receive State Honor

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) was well represented in the 2019 Distinguished Schools Program, which was announced by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond on February 25. GGUSD placed more high schools on the list than any other school district in Orange County with Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove, and Pacifica high schools all receiving the recognition. Schools are awarded for achieving exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years or closing the achievement gap between two school years.

Garden Grove Unified Parents and Community Invited to New History and Social Sciences Textbooks

New History/Social Science textbooks recommended for adoption and purchase by the Garden Grove Unified School District will be on public display from Friday, February 22nd, through Monday, March 18th, at the Garden Grove Unified School District Education Center located on 10331 Stanford Ave., Garden Grove. The new materials are for History/Social Sciences grades K-12.

New GGUSD Elementary Spelling Bee Winner Crowned

The 32nd Annual Garden Grove Unified School District Spelling Bee for elementary school students was won by Peters (4-6) Elementary fifth-grader Jessica Truong on February 20. Jessica correctly spelled the deciding word, resilience, to become the top speller among the 43 elementary schools in GGUSD.

Pre-Enrollment for Transitional Kindergarten and Full-Day Kindergarten Begins February 27

Pre-enrollment for Fall 2019/20 full-day transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten classes in the Garden Grove Unified School District begins Wednesday, February 27. Parents should pre-enroll online as early as possible at https://enroll.ggusd.usand contact their child’s home school for further assistance. Additional information about the enrollment process is available at www.ggusd.us (link). Please note that all GGUSD elementary school offices will be closed throughout the summer and will resume enrollment when the offices reopen in the fall.

GGUSD Invites Applicants for Bond Oversight Committee

The Garden Grove Unified School District is seeking qualified volunteers to serve on the independent Bond Oversight Committee (BOC), tasked with overseeing lawful and appropriate expenditures of the district’s bond funds. The Committee meets several times each year to provide public scrutiny and accountability for use of funds from Measure A, the $250 million bond measure approved in 2010 and Measure P, the $311 million bond measure approved in November 2016.

GGUSD Student Wins Districtwide Spelling Bee for Third Year in a Row

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) held its 32nd Annual 7th and 8th Grade Spelling Bee on January 16 at the Edgar District Meeting Center. Bell Intermediate School student Brandon Tran edged out 40 other GGUSD intermediate school students, correctly spelling lederhosen to place first for the third year in a row.

GGUSD Announces Partnership with Rancho Santiago Community College District

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) and Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) will partner with Santa Ana Community College on a new Early College High School program that will be offered at Santiago High School beginning the 2019-2020 school year. The Early College High School model program allows high school students to simultaneously earn high school and college credits beginning their freshman year.

GGUSD Hosts 6th Annual Latinos Unidos Conference

The sixth annual Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Latino Unidos Conference was held January 12 on the campus of California State University California, Fullerton with over 200 students in attendance. The conference is organized by district-level Latinos Unidos student board members to provide leadership training and help students prepare for academic, personal, and lifelong success.

Garden Grove Unified School District Accepts Applications for AVID College Readiness Program

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) is accepting applications from sixth grade students who are interested in applying for the district’s award-winning AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective course. GGUSD Board of Education Holds Swearing-In Ceremony and Selects President and Vice President

At its December 18 meeting, the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Board of Education held a swearing-in ceremony for Bob Harden who was re-elected during the November 2018 election and Lan Nguyen who was appointed to the position due to running unopposed.  The oath of office was administered by California State Assemblyman Tyler Diep.

La Quinta High School held its third annual Hall of Fame Night on Thursday, December 13, as staff, students, and community members gathered to honor legendary La Quinta CIF-champion coach Dave Demarest as well as La Quinta alumni and professional baseball player Brandon Laird.

Alamitos Intermediate School Named AVID National Demonstration School

Alamitos Intermediate School was named an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) National Demonstration School last week. Less than 200 schools across the nation and a select few in Orange County earn the prestigious designation, which signifies exemplary school-wide implementation of AVID’s proven college readiness systems and strategies.

Monroe Elementary Language Academy Receives Statewide Recognition

Monroe Elementary Language Academy was honored for its outstanding Spanish dual language immersion program during the 2018 Golden Bell Awards ceremony at the California School Board Association (CSBA) Conference in San Francisco last week. Monroe was one of only two dual language schools out of 400 across the state to receive this prestigious award.
