GGUSD Celebrates its Class of 2021 Valedictorians

The Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education celebrated the district’s eleven Class of 2021 high school valedictorians during its Board of Education meeting on June 1 with a video spotlight of each of the accomplished scholars. Four of the 11 valedictorians will attend ivy league universities including, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale.

We are happy to announce that all GGUSD schools will return to 5 full days of in-person instruction in the 2021-2022 school year.  A “normal” 5-day schedule is possible due to updated K-12 Schools Guidance announced by the California Department of Public Health on March 20th, which altered the 4-6 feet of distance from the previous guidance of February 22.

Three Schools Named 2021 California Distinguished Schools

Three Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) schools were recognized as 2021 California Distinguished Schools in an announcement by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond on March 18. Bell, Irvine, and McGarvin intermediate schools were among only 11 schools in Orange County and just over 100 across the state to be receive the prestigious recognition. Schools are awarded for achieving exceptional student performance or closing the achievement gap.

Pre-enrollment for Fall 2021/22 full-day transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten classes in the Garden Grove Unified School District begins Wednesday, February 17. Parents should pre-enroll online as early as possible at https://enroll.ggusd.us and contact their child’s home school for further assistance. Further information about the enrollment process is available at https://ggusd.us/parents/pre-enrollment-guide. All GGUSD elementary school offices will be closed throughout the summer and will resume enrollment when the offices reopen in the fall.

GGUSD Invites Applicants for Bond Oversight Committee

The Garden Grove Unified School District is seeking qualified volunteers to serve on the independent Bond Oversight Committee (BOC), tasked with overseeing lawful and appropriate expenditures of the district’s bond funds. The Committee meets several times each year to provide public scrutiny and accountability for use of funds from Measure A, the $250 million bond measure approved in 2010 and Measure P, the $311 million bond measure approved in November 2016.

Newhope Elementary Student’s Make-A-Wish Request is Loud and Clear

In an act of pure selflessness, Newhope Elementary School student Vivian Nguyen wished for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to purchase her school a new sound system for use in the multi-purpose room. Vivian was selected by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to receive a wish after battling a brain condition that affected many of her motor functions.

GGUSD Students Earn Awards and Technology Grants in County Mask Campaign

Four Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students were recognized for their winning entries in the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) Mask Message Contest. More than 600 students from Orange County participated in the contest, which tasked students with creating mask designs, writing essays, and developing videos to promote the importance of mask wearing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Hundreds Attend GGUSD’s Online Latinos Unidos Student Leadership Conference

More than 250 sixth through twelfth grade students from 19 GGUSD schools attended the district’s eighth annual Latinos Unidos Leadership Conference on Saturday, January 16.  The virtual conference, organized by district-level Latinos Unidos student board members, provides networking opportunities and leadership training designed to equip students with academic and personal skills for lifelong success.
