The Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Board of Education officially kicked off a new era for GGUSD athletics on Friday, August 23, during the district’s grand opening celebration of the brand new Bolsa Stadium. The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, alumni, members of the Bolsa Grande 1986 CIF-SS football championship team, members of Bolsa Grande High School’s very first football team from 1959, district staff, members of the community, and current GGUSD students.

GGUSD and Pacifica High School Strongly Condemn Offensive Video

Garden Grove Unified School District and Pacifica High School strongly condemn a video recorded last year of some students who engaged in offensive Nazi-related gestures. The video was filmed in November 2018 prior to the start of an after school hours, off-campus student athletics banquet in an empty and unsupervised room at the facility. The video was shared within a small group of students on SnapChat.  It was not brought to the attention of the administration of Pacifica High School until March of 2019, four months following the banquet, at which time school administrators took immediate action and addressed the situation with all students and families involved. Federal law (Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act) prohibits the district from disclosing details of student discipline.

GGUSD Celebrates Students’ Successful Internship Experience

On July 26, Garden Grove Unified School District celebrated more than 60 students who completed a powerful summer internship experience.  The summer internship program is a capstone course for incoming seniors enrolled in GGUSD’s high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways, and is supported by Orange County United Way’s Youth Career Connections Program and the Orange County Department of Education.

GGUSD Launches Early College Program

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) launched its Early College Dual Credit Program this week, providing a unique opportunity for 50 Santiago High School freshman students to earn college credit before completing high school.

GGUSD and City Partner to Increase School Safety

At its June 18 meeting, the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education approved an agreement with the City of Garden Grove to expand the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, increasing police resources and school safety.  The Garden Grove City Council unanimously approved the agreement earlier, during the June 11 regular City Council meeting.

GGUSD Student Receives Magical Wheelchair Makeover

Parkview Elementary School fifth grade student Kathleen Ha received a magical wheelchair makeover during a school-wide celebration last week.  Her new Harry Potter inspired wheelchair costume was designed by Magic Wheelchair, a non-profit organization whose volunteers build epic costumes for children in wheelchairs.

More than 3,300 high school seniors from Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) graduated from the district’s eight high schools during commencement ceremonies held June 13 and June 14. The Class of 2019 has an impressive list of academic accolades and exciting plans for college, career, and lifelong success.

GGUSD to Offer Free Summer Lunch Program at 15 Sites

GGUSD is offering a free Summer Meal program to help ensure that children have access to nutritional meals when school is not in session. The program will provide free summer lunch, available at 15 locations, to all children age 18 and under and all individuals with disabilities, regardless of age.

GGUSD and 42 Schools Recognized on California Honor Roll for High Achievement

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) was one of 26 school districts to be named a California Honor Roll District and more than 65% of the district’s schools were named 2018-2019 California Honor Roll Schools, more than any other school district in Orange County and the highest percentage among comparable districts statewide.

Approximately 700 Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students with special needs competed in Olympic-style competitions during the district’s 50th annual Special Games on May 31 at the Michael A. Monsoor Memorial Stadium at Garden Grove High School.

Patton Elementary School Wins $25,000 for New Technology

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma visited Patton Elementary School last week to present the school with a $25,000 check for new technology.  After the check presentation, Treasurer Ma joined with the school’s staff and approximately 950 students to duck tape Patton Principal Jennifer Carter and Assistant Principal Julie Kawai to the wall.

GGUSD Announces High School Graduation Schedule and Tips for Parking

GGUSD is pleased to announce the graduation schedule for the Class of 2019.  Due to current construction of the athletic stadium at Bolsa Grande High School, the majority of the high school graduation ceremonies will be held at the Michael A. Monsoor Memorial Stadium at Garden Grove High School, 11271 Stanford Avenue, Garden Grove.

GGUSD High Schools Celebrate Student Success with College Signing Day Events

GGUSD high schools celebrated their college-bound seniors this month with fun College Signing Day events, complete with music, cake, student performances, and photo stations to capture photos of students proudly holding signs displaying which college they plan to attend.

GGUSD Employees Recognized among Best in Orange County

Two GGUSD employees were recognized among an elite group of the best school employees in Orange County through the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) 2020 Teacher of the Year and 2019 Classified Employee of the Year programs.  As part of this prestigious honor, Maria Mejia, paraeducator at Wakeham Elementary School, was one of six finalists for OCDE’s Classified Employees of the Year program and Kelli Colombo, special education teacher at Rancho Alamitos High School, was named as one of ten semi-finalists in OCDE’s Teacher of the Year program.

GGUSD AVID Students Receive Scholarships from Angels Baseball Foundation

Ten Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students were recognized during the Orange County Department of Education’s AVID Eighth Grade Standout Ceremony held May 16 at Angel Stadium. GGUSD is proud to announce that two GGUSD students were selected as Angels Scholars and awarded $10,000 in college scholarships. This is a prestigious recognition that was only awarded to seven students across all of Orange County.

Garden Grove Unified School District Launches Second Computer Science Academy

Garden Grove Unified School District is partnering with Code to the Future to launch the district’s second Computer Science Academy at Fitz Intermediate School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Fitz administrators made the announcement to students and parents on April 25 during the school’s Open House celebration, which featured student performances, a tour of the school’s new Tech Lab and Media Center, and information about the school’s academic and extracurricular offerings.

Garden Grove Unified School District Schedules Preview of Recommended Textbooks for Business Mathematics and Finance

A new textbook for the Business Mathematics and Finance course has been recommended for adoption and purchase by the Garden Grove Unified School District.  The textbook will be on  public display from Monday, April 15 through Thursday, May 16 at the Garden Grove Unified School District Education Center, 10331 Stanford Ave., Garden Grove.

GGUSD Named among Nation’s Best for Music Education

Garden Grove Unified School District has received the 2019 Best Communities for Music Education Award, a distinction presented to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. GGUSD is one of only four districts in Orange County and one of 18 districts across California to receive this national recognition.
