Walton Intermediate Staff Re-Invest in Future of Students
- Monday, June 8, 2020
The staff from Walton Intermediate School in the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) invested $1,200 of their personal money to provide two $600 college scholarships to former Walton Intermediate students in GGUSD’s graduating Class of 2020.
This year’s scholarship recipients are Santiago High School senior Carlos Cervantes who will be attending UC Santa Cruz and Garden Grove High School senior Stephanie Tran who will be attending UC Irvine. Students received the awards during their high school’s virtual awards night events.
“We are regularly inspired by GGUSD employees who prove time and again that their care for students goes beyond the classroom,” said Board of Education Trustee Lan Nguyen.
The Walton scholarship fund is typically part of the school’s Open House Fiesta where families and staff sell items to raise money for the scholarship. This year, the Fiesta was cancelled due to the current stay-at-home order but knowing many families are facing financial hardship, staff was determined to fund the scholarship on their own.
