Approximately 800 Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students with disabilities competed in Olympic-style competitions during the district’s 52nd annual Special Games on May 19 at the stadium at Bolsa Grande High School. The event is organized by the district’s Adapted Physical Education Department.

When the district’s 800 student athletes arrived at the stadium, they were greeted with roaring cheers, high-fives, and shouts of encouragement from high school student leaders. The event opened with welcoming remarks which were followed by the National Anthem sung by Jordan ATP student Franson Langinbelik. The popular high school mascot race and torch relay officially kicked off the games.

Approximately 550 student leaders from the district’s eight high schools volunteer to run Special Games events, including relays, softball toss, soccer kick, football throw, volleyball, basketball, face painting, and more.

“Special Games reflects our district’s commitment to support the academic and personal skills of all students and allows us to come together to celebrate the abilities of our special needs students,” said Board of Education President Walter Muneton.
