Weekly Reopening Update – September 18, 2020
Dear Parents and Students,
The Board of Education and district leaders care deeply about the communities we serve. We empathize with and share the many challenges that our families, students and staff are facing as a result of COVID-19 and the related issues. As you know, the district recently announced the need to push back the dates of October 5th and 12th for reopening elementary and secondary schools. This was not an easy decision and we apologize to all of our stakeholders for setting a date and then extending that date. We wish it were not necessary but the decision to postpone reopening was made to ensure a safe and successful reopening in person across our 70 campuses serving 40,500 students, based on several factors including:
- the scheduling needs that arose from a larger than expected number of families who wanted to continue with distance learning at their school sites (rather than transferring to the new VLA) OR who wanted to see their school-specific hybrid schedules, being sent out today, before making a decision about returning to in-person instruction;
- Key equipment such as hand washing stations were unexpectedly delayed. They will be coming soon but they cannot all logistically be installed by October 5th and 12th;
- a significant number of staff indicating a possible need to take a Leave of Absence and the need to ensure all essential staff positions are filled for the return to in-person instruction.
We understand there is no perfect solution to school reopening and that perspectives vary widely- with 57% of parents on our most recent survey indicating an interest in returning immediately or sometime after local districts return to in-person instruction but 43% wanting to remain in distance education until January or June of 2021. We are working diligently to meet all families’ needs. While we continue to prepare for reopening, we are working to address the major concerns expressed by our communities, including:
Childcare: GGUSD has already implemented all-day at-school student supervision for working parents at three sites and have plans to expand this across the district to support working parents. More details will be coming soon.
Safety: Parents have expressed the need for more information about health and safety protocols beyond the information previously shared in our School Reopening Plan. If you haven’t read it, please click here for details about face coverings, physical distancing, cleaning, and campus response protocols for those with COVID symptoms. The district will soon be sharing videos that help illustrate these new protocols and district leaders will host a parent webinar covering all topics related to school reopening.
Distance Learning Support: GGUSD parents and students are invited to a webinar next week on Tuesday, September 22 at 10 a.m. or 5 p.m. to learn about Edgenuity, an online platform to support students with distance learning when they are not engaged in live instruction from their teacher- both during distance learning AND when students return to in-person classes. The program is free to GGUSD students and provides learning modules to supplement classroom instruction.
Well-being and Goal 2: Students’ mental health is as important as academic growth. In addition to our Start Strong curriculum via distance learning, we are planning for athletics and other extra-curricular activities in keeping with state and local guidelines.
Again, thank you for your patience as we work diligently to prepare for school reopening at nearly 70 school campuses and distance learning options for 40,500 students. We remain committed to the academic and personal success of all students and thankful to our community for your partnership.

La Mesa Directiva de Educación y los líderes del Distrito se preocupan profundamente por las comunidades que servimos. Como ustedes ya saben, el Distrito anunció recientemente la necesidad de retrasar la fechas del 5 y 12 de octubre para la reapertura de las escuelas primarias y secundarias. El tomar esta decisión no fue fácil y nos disculpamos con todas las partes interesadas por haber programado una fecha y luego extenderla. Deseamos que no hubiera sido necesario hacerlo, pero la decisión de posponer la reapertura se tomó para asegurar que la reapertura para la enseñanza en persona sea segura y exitosa en todos nuestros 70 planteles escolares que brindan servicios a 40,500 alumnos. Esta decisión se basó en varios factores, incluyendo:
- Las necesidades relacionadas con la programación de horarios que surgieron de un número de familias, mayor a lo que se esperaba, que quieren continuar con el aprendizaje a distancia en sus planteles escolares (en vez de transferirse a la nueva Academia de Aprendizaje Virtual (VLA)) O que querían ver los horarios híbridos específicos de su escuela, que se mandaran hoy, antes de tomar una decisión para regresar a la instrucción en persona;

Entendemos que no hay una solución perfecta para la reapertura escolar y que las perspectivas varían extensamente, con un 57% de padres de familia que indicaron en nuestra encuesta más reciente que estaban interesados en regresar inmediatamente o poco después de que el distrito local regresara a la instrucción en persona, pero un 43% quería permanecer en la educación a distancia hasta enero o junio del 2021. Estamos trabajando diligentemente para cumplir con las necesidades de todas las familias. Apoyo para el Aprendizaje a Distancia: Los padres de familia y alumnos del GGUSD están invitados a un seminario web la próxima semana, el martes, 22 de septiembre, a las 10:00 a.m. o a las 5:00 p.m. para aprender sobre Edgenuity, una plataforma en línea para apoyar a todos los alumnos con el aprendizaje a distancia cuando no estén participando en la instrucción en vivo con sus maestros, tanto durante el aprendizaje a distancia COMO cuando los alumnos regresen a las clases en persona. El programa es gratis para los alumnos del GGUSD y proporciona módulos de aprendizaje para suplementar la instrucción del salón de clases.
Bienestar y Meta 2:La salud mental de los alumnos es tan importante como el crecimiento académico. Además de nuestro currículo de Comenzar Fuerte (Start Strong) por medio del aprendizaje a distancia, estamos planeando los deportes y actividades extracurriculares para seguir las directrices locales y del estado.

Hội Đồng Giáo Dục và các viên chức đứng đầu trong học khu vô cùng quan tâm đến cộng đồng chúng tôi đang phục vụ. Chúng tôi thông cảm và chia sẻ cùng quý vị những khó khăn mà các gia đình, học sinh, và nhân viên đang phải đối phó do hậu quả của COVID-19 và những vấn đề khác liên quan. Như quý vị đã biết, học khu vừa thông báo về việc dời ngày mở trường lại, theo dự tính là 5 tháng 10 dành cho cấp tiểu học và 12 tháng 10 cho cấp trung học. Đây không phải là một quyết định dễ dàng và chúng tôi cáolỗi cùng mọi thành viên trong cộng đồng vì đã đưa ra thời hạn rồi phải hoãn lại. Chúng tôi ước gì không cần phải làm điều này nhưng quyết định tạm hoãn là để bảo đảm việc mở trường lại được thành công và an toàn cho toàn bộ 70 trường với 40,500 học sinh, dựa trên nhiều yếu tố như:
- yêu cầu về việc sắp xếp lịch học do số lượng phụ huynh muốn con em tiếp tục học trên mạng tại trường của các em nhiều hơn dự trù (thay vì đổi sang chương trình mới VLA) HAY những phụ huynh muốn xem trước lịch học kết hợp, sẽ được gửi ra ngày hôm nay, trước khi quyết định có cho con quay lại trường học hay không;
- những thiết bị chính yếu như là lắp đặt chỗ rửa tay bị đình trệ ngoài tiên liệu. Những thiết bị này sẽ sớm được giao đến nhưng không thể lắp đặt theo đúng như dự tính trước ngày 5 và 12 tháng 10.

Giữ Trẻ: GGUSD đã có chương trình giữ trẻ nguyên ngày tại ba trườngcho phụ huynh đi làm và dự định sẽ mở rộng chương trình này khắp học khu để hỗ trợ khi phụ huynh phải đi làm. Chúng tôi sẽ thông báo thêm chi tiết cho quý vị trong thời gian sắp tới.
An Toàn: Phụ huynh bày tỏ nhu cầu cần biết thêm các thông tin về quy định y tế và an toàn, ngoài những điều đã được thông báo trước đây trong Kế Hoạch Mở Trường Lại. Nếu quý vị chưa đọc, vui lòng nhấn vào đây (CLICK HERE) để biết các chi tiết về việc che mặt, khoảng cách an toàn, vệ sinh, và quy định ứng phó của nhà trường với những người có triệu chứng COVID. Học khu sẽ sớm phổ biến các video hướng dẫn về những quy định mới và các nhân viên điều hành học khu sẽ tổ chức buổi hướng dẫn phụ huynh trên mạng về mọi đề tài liên quan đến việc mở trường lại.
Hỗ Trợ Việc Học Trên Mạng Tại Nhà: Mời Phụ huynh và học sinh GGUSD tham dự buổi hướng dẫn trên mạng tuần tới vào lúc 10:00 sáng hay 5:00 chiều thứ ba, ngày 22 tháng 9 để tìm hiểu thêm về Edgenuity, một nền mạng hỗ trợ việc học trên mạng khi học sinh không tham dự vào những bài giảng trực tiếp của giáo viên- cả khi học trên mạng tại nhà VÀ khi các em quay trở lại trường. Chương trình miễn phí này dành cho học sinh GGUSD và có những tính năng học tập để bổ sung cho phần giảng dạy trong lớp.
Sự Lành Mạnh và Mục Tiêu thứ 2: Sự lành mạnh về tinh thần của học sinh cũng quan trọng như tiến bộ về học tập của các em. Ngoài giáo trình Sự Khởi Đầu Vững Mạnh qua việc học trên mạng, chúng tôi đang hoạch định những sinh hoạt ngoại khoá và thể thao theo đúng các quy định của địa phương và tiểu bang.
Một lần nữa, cám ơn quý vị đã kiên nhẫn trong lúc chúng tôi tận lực chuẩn bị cho việc học trên mạng và mở lại gần 70 trường để phục vụ 40,500 học sinh. Chúng tôi luôn quyết tâm trang bị cho các học sinh sự thành đạt về học tập và năng lực cá nhân và cám ơn cộng đồng đã hợp tác với chúng tôi.
