GGUSD Teacher Receives Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship for Vietnam Teaching Exchange Program

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Vietnamese language teacher Phuong Thao Dinh of McGarvin Intermediate School has received a grant from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to teach abroad in Vietnam during the summer.

Miss Dinh, who applied to participate in the program, is one of only 20 educators from the United States who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program in 2018-2019. She was chosen as a recipient of a Fulbright grant based on her academic and professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential.  

“We are proud to have teachers here at GGUSD like Miss Dinh who are recognized as leaders in their profession and who seek out opportunities to improve instructional strategies in their area of expertise,” said Lan Nguyen, Board of Education vice president. 

According to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, “the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program sends U.S. teachers abroad and brings international teachers to the United States for a semester of independent study and professional development focused on sharing international best practices and developing students’ global competence. Participants complete an inquiry project, take courses, share their expertise with local teachers and students, and engage in action planning to implement what they learn on the program when they return home.”

Last month, GGUSD received the 2018 Advocacy Leadership award for the district’s outstanding cultural and linguistic responsiveness to English learners and emerging bilingual students.
