Approximately 700 Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students with disabilities competed in Olympic-style competitions during the district’s 51st annual Special Games on May 20 at the stadium at Bolsa Grande High School. The event is organized by the district’s Adapted Physical Education Department.

Despite the rain, when the district’s 700 student athletes arrived at the stadium, they were greeted with roaring cheers and high-fives from high school student leaders. Jordan ATP student Kevin Doan sang the National Anthem to kick off the event followed by the popular high school mascot race.  Pacifia High School student Evelyn Nguyen sang Unbreakable by Janelle Monae and Kelly Clarkson during the torch relay to officially kick off the games.

Approximately 400 student leaders from the district’s eight high schools volunteer to run Special Games events, including relays, softball toss, soccer kick, football throw, volleyball, basketball, face painting, and more.

“Special Games reflects the heart of our school district as we celebrate the gifts and abilities of all students with special needs,” said Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen.
