GGUSD Celebrates New Skylark Preschool with Ribbon-Cutting Event

On October 18, Garden Grove Unified School District’s (GGUSD) Board of Education hosted a ribbon cutting celebration to commemorate the successful opening of Skylark Preschool, which serves students the district’s new affordable, full-day preschool program, as well as the state preschool program and special education preschool.

More than 150 parents, community leaders, and staff attended the event, which began with a special musical performance from the preschool students.  Board of Education President Lan Nguyen and Vice President Teri Rocco offered remarks about the profound benefits of GGUSD’s preschool programs, and the board’s excitement in offering a new low-cost option for families who do not meet the state’s income eligibility requirements for the state preschool program. 

“We believe in equity and access for all students and that all children deserve the option of attending a high quality preschool” said Lan Nguyen, Board of Education president. “When we surveyed our community, it was clear that this is something our families wanted too.”

“Attending a preschool in our award-wining school district provides students with a competitive advantage,” said Teri Rocco.  “Our teachers are among the very best and they provide rich instruction that really makes a difference during this important year in a child’s development when they are learning to learn.”

Principal Cammy Devereux provided an update about the high level of learning and socio-emotional development that has occurred since school began.  She highlighted the enrichment programs including Spanish, science, technology, art, math, and music, as well as the school’s inclusive physical education program.

Boys and Girls Club CEO Mark Surmanian highlighted the before and after school program that is available for preschool parents at a low-cost. Local leaders presented the Board of Education with certificates to commemorate the occasion, and joined in for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Local leaders, including GGUSD Board of Education members and Orange County Board of Education President Mari Barke toured the preschool, visiting its STEAM Lab, Arts and Music Conservatory, and Spanish enrichment room.
