2022-2023 GGUSD Valedictorians

Angeline Nguyen

Bolsa Grande High School:  Angeline Nguyen will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Neuroscience. She hopes to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant. Her accomplishments include being named Woman of the Month, being on the Principal’s Honor Roll, and earning the AP Scholar with Distinction. Angeline’s favorite high school activities include hanging out with friends, playing volleyball, and the Matador Games Performance. A resident of Garden Grove, Angeline also attended Morningside Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. She is the daughter of Andy and Bich-Thao Nguyen.

Catherine Palm

Bolsa Grande High School:  Catherine Palm will attend California State University Long Beach. She hopes to pursue a career as a Neonatal Physician. Her accomplishments include being President’s Scholar (CSULB), National Merit Scholar, Garden Grove Student Athlete of Character, and Cross Country Garden Grove League MVP sophomore and senior year. Catherine’s favorite high school activities include cross country, track and field, and choir. Catherine also attended Brookhurst Elementary and Ralston Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Thu Tong and Richard Palm.

David Kim

Garden Grove High School:  David Kim will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Computer Science and Engineering.  His accomplishments include being an Eagle Scout, earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award and Certificate of Merit Piano State Honors. David’s favorite activities include being a part of track and field, cross country, and Animal Rescue Foundation Club. A resident of Garden Grove, David also attended Peters Elementary and Lake Intermediate. He is the son of Michael and Jae Kim.

Kandice Nguyen

Garden Grove High School:  Kandice Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine in the fall. She hopes to pursue a career in healthcare. Her accomplishments include earning first place in the JV Backstroke in League Finals, earning the title of National Merit Scholar and high school valedictorian, and earning several 5’s on her AP exams. Kandice’s favorite high school activities include GGHS Swim, AP Physics projects, and AP Capstone. A resident of Garden Grove, Kandice also attended Peters Elementary and Lake Intermediate. She is the daughter of Elise and Kevin Nguyen.

Uyen Nguyen

Garden Grove High School:  Uyen Nguyen will attend UCLA in the fall to major in nursing with plans to become a Pediatric Nurse.  In high school, she enjoyed participating in Class of 2023, American Red Cross and Dance. She is a National Merit Semifinalist, Simon Scholar, and Most Worthy Argo Semifinalist. Prior to high school, she attended Peters Elementary and Jordan Intermediate.

Deisy Canales

Hare High School:  Deisy Canales will attend Cypress College in the fall. She hopes to pursue a career as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Her accomplishments include being nominated for Student of the Week, being on the Principals Honor Roll, and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Deisy’s favorite high school activities include being a part of ASB, Project Kinship circles and groups, and giving back through community service. As a resident of Santa Ana, Deisy also attended Rosita Elementary. She is the daughter of Robertina Martinez.

Noah Tran

La Quinta High School:  Noah Tran will attend the University of California, Berkeley to double major in Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career as an electrical engineer or a teacher. His accomplishments include being named Aztec of the Year Finalist, earning his Guild Audition Piano High School Diploma, and taking a total of 14 AP classes. Noah’s favorite high school activities include helping out in the school library after school, CSF tutoring, and Math League competitions. Prior to high school, Noah also attended Paine Elementary and McGarvin Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, he is the son of Nam Tran and Uyen Ho.

Zurisadai Aranda

Los Amigos High School:  Zurisadai Aranda Azpeitia will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to double major in Latin American Studies and Education Studies. She hopes to pursue a career in education as a High School Teacher or a College Professor. Her accomplishments include being an AP Scholar with Distinction, earning the National Hispanic Recognition Award, and being a Gates Scholarship Finalist. Zurisadai’s favorite high school activities include hanging out with friends, going to school dances, and exploring new places in Orange County. Prior to high school, Zurisadai also attended Carrillo Elementary and Doig Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, she is the daughter of Rafael and Fabiola Aranda.

Daniel Contreras

Los Amigos High School:  Daniel Contreras will attend the University of California, Los Angeles as part of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career as a Software or Computer Engineer for a tech company. His accomplishments include being Co-Valedictorian for the LAHS class of 2023, Simon Scholar Foundation Recipient, a member of the National Honor Society and earning the State Seal of Biliteracy and Civic Engagement. Daniel’s favorite high school activities include attending football and basketball games, school dances, and spirit assemblies. Prior to high school, Daniel attended Ethan Allen Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. A resident of Santa Ana, he is the son of Cecilio and Josefina Contreras.

Rachel Yun

Pacifica High School:  Rachel Yun will attend Yale University to double major in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and English. She hopes to pursue a career as a Cardiovascular Surgeon or Neurosurgeon and publish at least one book of poetry or fiction. Her accomplishments include earning a full QuestBridge Match Scholarship to Yale and a STEM Scholarship through the College Prep program, being named a Gates Scholar, and publishing a research paper on neuroplasticity with the International Journal of Health Sciences. She is also proud that during her time as the current NJROTC Commanding Officer, for the first time in Pacifica’s history, the NJROTC qualified for nationals, traveled to Florida and placed fourth in the nation. Rachel’s favorite high school activities include training with NJROTC for drill competitions, practicing K-Pop dances with Korean Culture Club in preparation for International Night, and attending community service opportunities with National Honor Society. Prior to high school, Rachel also attended Patton Elementary and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Cypress, she is the daughter of Hye Young Ko and Sung Joong Yun.

Valentine Nguyen

Rancho Alamitos High School: Valentine Nguyen will attend the University of California, Los Angles to major in Human Biology and Society. She hopes to pursue a career as a Surgeon. Her accomplishments include representing Rancho Alamitos High School as a Girls State Delegate in Sacramento and being named a Simon Scholar, a USC Bovard Scholar and a Garden Grove Elk’s December Student of the Month. Valentine’s favorite high school activities include volunteering for Red Cross, mentoring students on college applications, and tutoring in the library after school. Prior to high school, Valentine attended Stanford Elementary and Jordan Intermediate. A resident of Anaheim, she is the daughter of Keith Vietnam and Trinity Nguyen.

Nhu Cao

Santiago High School:  Nhu Cao will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology. She hopes to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. Her accomplishments include being an AVID Senior Stand-out, being selected for the California Youth Council, joining the Leadership Team for the Orange County Youth Council, and being President of Friday Night Live. Nhu’s favorite high school activities include being a part of Friday Night Live, Orange County Youth Council, and the American Red Cross. A resident of Garden Grove, Nhu also attended Clinton Elementary and Doig Intermediate. She is the daughter of Cuong Cao and Nhung Hoang.

Kevin Wong

Santiago High School:  Kevin Wong will attend the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall. He hopes to pursue a career at a large tech company and to have the opportunity to travel in his free time. His accomplishments include getting into his dream school (UCLA), serving as on officer for the Red Cross and CSF clubs, and completing the Early College Academy. Prior to high school, Kevin attended Clinton Elementary and Doig Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, Kevin is the son of Can Du and Phuong Nguyen.

Sarah Van

Santiago High School:  Sarah Van will attend Yale University in the fall. She hopes to pursue a career as a Psychiatrist or a Chemist. Her accomplishments include receiving the Questbridge National College Match, being named Key Club’s Club of the Year, and receiving the Key Club Silver Award for Service. Sarah’s favorite high school activities include being a part of Key Club, National Honor Society, and tennis. Prior to high school, Sarah attended Eisenhower Elementary and Doig Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Hue Diep and Van Truong.

2022-2023 GGUSD Salutatorians

Joshua Hoang

Bolsa Grande High School:  Joshua Hoang will attend the University of California, Berkeley to major in Chemical Engineering and minor in Mathematics. He hopes to pursue a career as a Laboratory Research Chemist or Industrial Productions Manager to invent more environmentally friendly products. His accomplishments include earning second place in the UCI Math Escape Room Challenge, being named Lawyer of the Week at UCI Saturday Academy of Law, and earning the Certificate of Professional Communications as part of the Youth Career Connections internship program. Joshua’s favorite high school activities include exploring interests and participating in competitions with Bolsa’s STEM/MESA Club, organizing clean-up and recycling events as a member of the Wilderness Adventure Club, and promoting healthy choices as a member of Friday night Live. Prior to high school, Joshua attended Peters Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, he is the son of Thang Hoang and Trang Anh Thi Le.

Trung Dao

Bolsa Grande High School:  Trung Dao will attend the University of California, San Diego to major in Biochemistry. He hopes to pursue a career as a Cardiology Physician. His accomplishments include graduating among the top of his class, achieving a three and a half octaves range from F#3 to A6 (double A) on his trumpet, and learning to create any origami by looking at any crease pattern. Trung’s favorite high school activities include listening to Mr. Miller’s daily commentaries, engaging in debate with his friends, and participating in the Physics Boat Regatta. Prior to high school, Trung attended Sunnyside Elementary and Jordan Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, he is the son of Huong Nguyen and Tam Pham.

Austin Hoang

Bolsa Grande High School:  Austin Hoang will attend Irvine Valley College with plans to transfer to UCI or UCLA to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career as a Senior Developer and hopes to retire young and have the opportunity to travel the world. His accomplishments include being Salutatorian, winning Defensive Player of the Year his sophomore year in basketball, and earning the AP Scholar with Distinction award. Austin’s favorite high school activities include being on the basketball team, club services, and International Week. Prior to high school, Austin attended Excelsior Elementary and Ralston Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, he is the son of Andy Hoang and Susan Nguyen.

Dylan Nam Nguyen

Garden Grove High School:  Dylan Nam Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Chemical Engineering. He hopes to pursue a career in pharmaceutical manufacturing or biomolecular engineering with the goal of changing society as a whole for the common good. His accomplishments include being named salutatorian, placing second in the Argos Creative Writing Contest for Autobiographical Incident, earning the State Seal of Civic Engagement, completing the ACS National Chemistry Olympiad, and being named an AP Scholar with Distinction. Dylan’s favorite high school activities include, participating and organizing GGHS Vietnamese Culture Night for three years, being a participant of CRFOC’s High School Mock Trial Competition, participating in the 2022 Congressional App Challenge, and being a co-director of a Lion Dance Troupe in Orange County that began in GGHS. Prior to high school, Dylan attended Ethan Allen Elementary and Irvine Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, he is the son of Thao Tran and Lan Nguyen.

Kelly Ancheta

Hare High School:  Kelly Ancheta will attend Golden West College to earn her Associate Degree in Nursing with plans to transfer to Capella University to major in Nursing. She hopes to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner. Her accomplishments include being on the Principals Honor Roll and being named Student of the Week for showing perseverance and kindness. Kelly’s favorite high school activities include being on the cheerleading team, performing for choir, and participating in the ASB Annual Summit. She is a resident of Garden Grove and is the daughter of Sheila and Bayani Ancheta.

William Nguyen

La Quinta High School:  William Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Biochemistry. He hopes to pursue a career in medicine. His accomplishments include scoring a 4 on the AP Spanish Exam, being named a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He’s proud of being ranked second in La Quinta’s Class of 2023.  William’s favorite high school activities include Math League Competitions, going to the Physics Day Field Trip at Knott’s Berry Farm, and playing ping pong with his friends. A resident of Fountain Valley, William is the son of Khanh and Christina Nguyen.

Alvin Tran

La Quinta High School:  Alvin Tran will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Computer Science. He hopes to be successful enough to just sit back and relax one day in the future. His accomplishments include performing at SCPA Finals for Winter Drumline, being a Commended Scholar for NMSQT, and being an AP Scholar with Distinction. Alvin’s favorite high school activities include marching band, Winter Drumline, and hanging out with friends. Prior to high school, Alvin attended Allen Elementary and McGarvin Intermediate. A resident of Westminster, he is the son of Khanh and Hong Tuyen Tran.

Andrew Tang

Los Amigos High School: Andrew Tang will attend the University of California, Los Angeles. He hopes to pursue a career in bioengineering. His accomplishments include being selected as a Simon Scholar, being Vice-President of the Year for D04N Key Club, and memorizing 40 digits of Pi in 6th grade. Andrew’s favorite high school memories include Key Club events, Senior Prom, and football games. Andrew  attended Newhope Elementary and Fitz Intermediate. A resident of Fountain Valley, he is the son of Holly Tang.

Kelvin Nguyen

Pacifica High School:  Kelvin Nguyen will attend Stanford University to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career in computer programming specializing in expanding accessibility technology. His accomplishments include becoming an Eagle Scout, creating a computer program to help his Spanish teacher, being co-founder of Pacifica’s STEM Club “Serious About Science,” attending a CS internship with Synoptek, and earning first place in eighth grade in the GGUSD Endologix Fair. His favorite high school activities include entering STEM competitions with his friends, 5 a.m. volleyball practices, and performing the dance FEVER for Korean Culture Club. Kelvin attended Enders Elementary and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, Kelvin is the son of An Nguyen and April Vo.

Kenneth Ha

Pacifica High School:  Kenneth Ha will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Education Studies. He hopes to obtain a Professional Engineer license and become a Control System Engineer and university professor. His accomplishments include earning first place in the 2023 SCPA PSO Championship Finals, becoming a Front Ensemble Co-Captain, being named Mariner of the Month and AP Scholar with Distinction as well as earning five club stoles/cords and being on the board for three clubs. His favorite activities include performing and competing in the marching band and drumline, volunteering and participating in clubs, and watching performing art shows. Prior to high school, Kenneth attended Faylane, Enders and Patton elementary schools and Bell Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, Kenneth is the son of Vivian Pham and Scott Ha.

Tiffany Pham

Rancho Alamitos High School:  Tiffany Pham will attend the University of California, Los Angeles to major in Global Studies or Cognitive Science. She hopes to travel around the world to increase equity for all and write her own book one day. Her accomplishments include receiving the CTE Department Award, becoming a Questbridge College Prep Scholar and National Match Finalist, being a Simon Scholar, and earning two internships in high school. Tiffany’s favorite high school activities include volunteering at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival with Key Club, performing during International Week for Korean Culture Club, and volunteering around Orange County. Prior to high school, Tiffany attended Zeyen Elementary and Alamitos Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Nguyen Le.

Nhu Dang

Rancho Alamitos High School:  Nhu Dang will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Business Administration. She hopes to open and own her own business one day and make the world a better place. Her accomplishments include receiving the Math Department Award for three years, participating in the culinary CTE pathway and winning third place in the ProStart Cup Competition, and being a finalist for Vaqueros of the Year and for the Gate Scholarship. She’s also proud that she interned at SMA, a business management company and CodeSpeak Lab, a graphic design company. Nhu’s favorite high school activities include participating in cultural performances with Korean Culture Club, community service events through various clubs, and midnight Zoom sessions with friends to study for exams. Prior to high school, Nhu attended Lawrence Elementary and Alamitos Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Thuy Mai.

Katie Nguyen

Santiago High School:  Katie Nguyen will attend the University of California, Berkeley to double major in Public Health and Business Administration. She hopes to pursue a career as a Healthcare Administrator in healthcare management. Her accomplishments include earning the state Seal of Civic Engagement, being an AP Scholar with Honor, being named MVP of the tennis team, and winning national and international piano competitions. Her favorite high school activities include tennis, orchestra, and being a part of Red Cross. Prior to high school, Katie attended Peters Elementary and Walton Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, she is the daughter of Tin and Nha Nguyen.

Nathan Nguyen

Santiago High School:  Nathan Nguyen will attend the University of California, Irvine to major in Computer Science. He hopes to pursue a career as a Software Engineer and aspires to work for Microsoft, Google, or Apple. His accomplishments include receiving the Gates Scholarship, being a student representative at the 2023 GGUSD State of the District, and delivering a celebratory speech to the first graduating cohort of the Early College Academy. Nathan’s favorite high school activities include building friendships in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, hosting substance prevention activities with Friday Night Live, and volunteering with the Vietnamese Student Association and other clubs. Prior to high school, Nathan attended Riverdale Elementary and Doig Intermediate. A resident of Garden Grove, he is the son of Andy and Athena Nguyen.
