GGUSD Celebrates Student Abilities with 50th Annual Special Games

Approximately 700 Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students with special needs competed in Olympic-style competitions during the district’s 50th annual Special Games on May 31 at the Michael A. Monsoor Memorial Stadium at Garden Grove High School.

Patton Elementary School Wins $25,000 for New Technology

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma visited Patton Elementary School last week to present the school with a $25,000 check for new technology.  After the check presentation, Treasurer Ma joined with the school’s staff and approximately 950 students to duck tape Patton Principal Jennifer Carter and Assistant Principal Julie Kawai to the wall.

Monsoor Memorial Stadium at Garden Grove High School, 11271 Stanford Avenue, Garden Grove.

GGUSD Employees Recognized among Best in Orange County

Two GGUSD employees were recognized among an elite group of the best school employees in Orange County through the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) 2020 Teacher of the Year and 2019 Classified Employee of the Year programs.  As part of this prestigious honor, Maria Mejia, paraeducator at Wakeham Elementary School, was one of six finalists for OCDE’s Classified Employees of the Year program and Kelli Colombo, special education teacher at Rancho Alamitos High School, was named as one of ten semi-finalists in OCDE’s Teacher of the Year program.

Ten Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students were recognized during the Orange County Department of Education’s AVID Eighth Grade Standout Ceremony held May 16 at Angel Stadium. GGUSD is proud to announce that two GGUSD students were selected as Angels Scholars and awarded $10,000 in college scholarships. This is a prestigious recognition that was only awarded to seven students across all of Orange County.

Garden Grove Unified School District Launches Second Computer Science Academy

Garden Grove Unified School District is partnering with Code to the Future to launch the district’s second Computer Science Academy at Fitz Intermediate School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Fitz administrators made the announcement to students and parents on April 25 during the school’s Open House celebration, which featured student performances, a tour of the school’s new Tech Lab and Media Center, and information about the school’s academic and extracurricular offerings.

Garden Grove Unified School District has received the 2019 Best Communities for Music Education Award, a distinction presented to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) hosted its 41st annual First Impressions Art Show to celebrate the creative talent of hundreds of students from all grade levels from preschool to high school. Awards were presented in front of a packed room of parents, staff, and community members at the Garden Grove Community Center on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) was well represented in the 2019 Distinguished Schools Program, which was announced by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond on February 25. GGUSD placed more high schools on the list than any other school district in Orange County with Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove, and Pacifica high schools all receiving the recognition. Schools are awarded for achieving exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years or closing the achievement gap between two school years.

New GGUSD Elementary Spelling Bee Winner Crowned

The 32nd Annual Garden Grove Unified School District Spelling Bee for elementary school students was won by Peters (4-6) Elementary fifth-grader Jessica Truong on February 20. Jessica correctly spelled the deciding word, resilience, to become the top speller among the 43 elementary schools in GGUSD.

Pre-enrollment for Fall 2019/20 full-day transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten classes in the Garden Grove Unified School District begins Wednesday, February 27. Parents should pre-enroll online as early as possible at https://enroll.ggusd.usand contact their child’s home school for further assistance. Additional information about the enrollment process is available at www.ggusd.us (link). Please note that all GGUSD elementary school offices will be closed throughout the summer and will resume enrollment when the offices reopen in the fall.

The Garden Grove Unified School District is seeking qualified volunteers to serve on the independent Bond Oversight Committee (BOC), tasked with overseeing lawful and appropriate expenditures of the district’s bond funds. The Committee meets several times each year to provide public scrutiny and accountability for use of funds from Measure A, the $250 million bond measure approved in 2010 and Measure P, the $311 million bond measure approved in November 2016.

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) held its 32nd Annual 7th and 8th Grade Spelling Bee on January 16 at the Edgar District Meeting Center. GGUSD Announces Partnership with Rancho Santiago Community College District

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) and Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) will partner with Santa Ana Community College on a new Early College High School program that will be offered at Santiago High School beginning the 2019-2020 school year. The Early College High School model program allows high school students to simultaneously earn high school and college credits beginning their freshman year.

The sixth annual Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Latino Unidos Conference was held January 12 on the campus of California State University California, Fullerton with over 200 students in attendance. The conference is organized by district-level Latinos Unidos student board members to provide leadership training and help students prepare for academic, personal, and lifelong success.

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) is accepting applications from sixth grade students who are interested in applying for the district’s award-winning AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective course. AVID is a six-year program and academic elective offered at all ten of GGUSD’s intermediate schools and seven high schools that equips students with college and career readiness skills.
