Summer Meals Program Announced

Lunches will be served during the summer school session at nine locations in the Garden Grove Unified School District through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s summer food service program.

The summer lunch program will operate June 24 through August 1 (noon – 1 p.m.) at Rancho and Santiago high schools; July 1 through July 26 (9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.) at Heritage, Morningside, Stanford, and Woodbury elementary schools; and (10 a.m. – 11 a.m.) at Alamitos, Doig, and Fitz intermediate schools.

Lunches, provided at no charge, are designed to meet a student’s nutritional needs. A typical lunch may include a submarine sandwich, pizza, shaker salads or yogurt, served with green salad, assorted fresh or chilled fruit, and milk.

“The summer meals program offers healthy lunches for children during the weeks when school is not in session,” said Agnes Lally, district food services director. “This service is important for young people who normally receive school meals during the school year. Improper nutrition can lead to consequences such as health problems, low energy levels, and poor performance in school.”

Any person 18 years old and younger is eligible to take advantage of this free program regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability.
