GGUSD Students Receive Scholarships for Winning Science Projects in 2018 Science Fest

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students received college scholarship funds awarded by Endologix, a medical equipment manufacturer, which hosted a Science Fest Showcase and scholarship presentation on Thursday, April 12, at the company’s headquarters in Irvine. This was the second annual Science Fest Showcase, made possible through a unique partnership with GGUSD, Endologix, the Orange County United Way, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove. 

During the Science Fest Showcase, students highlighted their science projects to family members and Endologix staff.  Projects included a variety of science experiments studying solar power, energy, sound, and other topics chosen by students.  First, second, and third place science fair winners received gift cards and certificates.  First place winners were also awarded college scholarships. Endologix also awarded funds to each school’s science department. 

“We are grateful for the support of Orange County United Way and the industry professionals at Endologix for bringing our students exciting hands-on opportunities to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math,” said Lan Nguyen, GGUSD Board of Education vice president. “We know STEAM is an emerging career path with in-demand jobs and these rich experiences are powerful for our students.”

Endologix provided students with after-school STEM programs and an opportunity to tour its worldwide headquarters to observe product creation, experiments conducted in labs, and interact with professional engineers.  The Science Fest Showcase is an exciting culminating event designed to increase student engagement and interest in the field of science.
Students with first-place Science Fest projects include Bell Intermediate School student Ellie Nordquist; Fitz Intermediate School student Khoa Cu; Jordan Intermediate School students Kathleen Le and Emily Nguyen; Ralston Intermediate School student Josephine Rusli; and Walton Intermediate School students Celeste Torres and Valerie Garcia.
