GGUSD Students Receive College Scholarships through AVID and Angels Scholars Program

Scholarship recipient honored at the Anaheim Angels Stadium

Ten Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students were recognized during the Orange County Department of Education’s AVID 8th Grade Standout Ceremony held May 10 at Angel Stadium.  GGUSD is proud to announce that four GGUSD students were selected as Angels Scholars and awarded $10,000 in college scholarships.  This is a prestigious recognition that was only awarded to eight students across all of Orange County.

“GGUSD has an award-winning AVID program and we are so grateful for the generosity of The Angels Foundation to help make college more affordable for our hard-working AVID students,” said Dr. Gabriela Mafi, Superintendent.

The ten 8th Grade Standouts from GGUSD intermediate schools include:  Sierra Acosta, Alamitos; Parker Moore, Bell; Angelica Dominguez, Doig; Gabriel Langinbelik, Fitz; Jenny Phan, Irvine; Kelly Van Nguyen, Jordan; Tu Nguyen, Lake; Celine Ruan, McGarvin; Valentina Rodriguez, Ralston; and Jernail Dhillon, Walton. The Angels Foundation generously gifted each of the Standouts an HP laptop along with an Angels hat, certificate, and medal.

GGUSD’s four Angels Scholars are Sierra Acosta, Alamitos; Parker Moore, Bell; Gabriel Langinbelik, Fitz; and Jernail Dhillon, Walton.  The $10,000 scholarship awarded to the Angels Scholars is contingent upon a commitment to remain in the AVID program for the four years in high school and to apply and be accepted to a four-year university.

Students will also be honored at the Angel's pre-game ceremony on May 30th before the 7:05 pm game. They will receive an Angels jersey with the year their scholarship was awarded.
