GGUSD Bus Drivers Earn Safe Driving Awards at Annual Roadeo

GGUSD bus drivers celebrating their win at the Annual Roadeo.

The Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) hosted the 57th annual “School Bus Safety Roadeo” on March 11, a safe driving competition among bus drivers from across the state.  GGUSD bus drivers earned 11 of the 23 awards presented in various categories, and were cheered on by GGUSD employees, administrators, and board members.

“GGUSD is proud to employ some of the most committed, skilled bus drivers in the industry,” said Teri Rocco, GGUSD Board of Education trustee. “We are grateful that our drivers take such pride in ensuring students have a safe ride to and from school.”

The competition is hosted by the Driver Trainer Advisory Council (DTAC) and CASTO (California Association of Transportation Officials). Contestants participated in written and driving performance tests, including an obstacle course that proved safe maneuverability as well as tests that examined parallel parking and backing up skills.

GGUSD’s team of David Hernandez, Jose Navarro, and Kimberly Daily took home second place among teams competing from Orange County while Rosa Del Rio, Rosie Obregon and Shannon Lauricella earned third place in the same category. GGUSD also took home best represented. For individual drivers in Orange County, Rosa Del Rio earned second place and David Hernandez earned fifth place.

In the novice category for brand new bus drivers who have held their initial certification for less than eighteen months, GGUSD’s Crystal Brown won first place and Rhonda Szucs won second place. In individual events in the novice category, Julia Camacho scored highest on the written test, Rhonda Szucs had the best right turn, Crystal Brown won for the offset alley category and Gabriella D’Angelo won for best parallel parking performance. GGUSD’s numerous wins in the novice category are a reflection of how well the training program is run by our bus driver training team.
