GGUSD Initiates Plan to Develop Vietnamese Dual Language Program

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) is developing a dual language program in Vietnamese.  The school district is in the process of hiring a K-6 Vietnamese Dual Language Development Preparation TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) and a K-6 Vietnamese Language Teacher.

“We already know the tremendous academic and social benefits that dual language programs provide and we are excited to offer students the opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate in Vietnamese and English,” said Lan Nguyen, Board of Education President.  “These newly-created positions will play an important role in developing a high quality program that prepares diverse students for success in a global society.”

GGUSD serves more than 44,000 students including a large Vietnamese population, the second largest ethnicity in the district.  The K-6 Vietnamese Dual Language Development Preparation TOSA will research and visit existing Vietnamese dual language programs and will develop Vietnamese language materials and lesson plans aligned to rigorous learning standards.  The district’s plan also includes a District Dual Language Focus Group consisting of parents, teachers, and community members.

“We will take best practices from across the nation to launch a Vietnamese Dual Language program that is student-centered,” said Nguyen.  “We remain committed to meeting the needs of our culturally-diverse communities.”
